ABSTRACT
Westray Mine conducted its operations in the Pictou coalfield of Nova Scotia. Although coal mining had taken place in the gassy seams of Pictou for over 200 years, Westray was the only underground coal mine to operate in the region since the nearby Allan Mine closed in the 1950s. During its life of 40 years, the Allan Mine had suffered eight methane explosions.
