Estimating tunnel induced building deformation is a key issue in the planning and construction process of any new underground construction within an urban development. For recent and currently planned tunnel projects in London, a three stage approach was applied which, in the first two phases, evaluates the settlement from the expected greenfield settlement trough, described by a Gaussian curve (Mair et al., 1997). If necessary a more detailed analysis of the tunnel-soilbuilding interaction problem has to be carried out in the third phase. Such an assessment now often involves Finite Element (FE) analysis.
