ABSTRACT

N ow is the tim e to decide l However in many cases while the farmer would like to change the future, he is unable for various reasons. It may be that in the past when an area of land no longer produced worthwhile crops the people cleared good fresh land, but now that is no longer pos sible. The people may not know how to conserve the soil, in fact few agencies which claim to know are able to produce evidence of economical and lasting soil conservation and soil improvement. Too many projects have failed and so confidence in change for the better is often non-existent. It could also be the case that the society is against change, perhaps because of attempts in the past which have only made things worse, I have seen where government soil conservation projects have caused landslides which carried houses with them. In other places where the so called conservation work has buried the top soil and resulted in useless infertile terraces. It may be that practical lasting demonstrations and explanations are needed to show that poor farmers do not need to end up as landless, workless beggars. This book can help those who want to enable rural people to have a lasting future, to show the way, involve farmers. Then to invite others to come and see, and discuss with those fellow farmers how what works with them may perhaps with local modification, be suitable in their situation.
