ABSTRACT

Soil erosion is not simply a problem of landslides blocking roads and reservoirs being silted up, it is of far greater significance. Soil erosion reduces the ability of the land to support plants. We need plants for food, fibre and fuel, for paper, building materials, it also reduces the ability of poorer countries to feed themselves and pay off their debts. We also need plants to convert carbon dioxide, into oxygen and to act as carbon stores or sinks to reduce the greenhouse effect which is causing climate change, with increasing storms, flooding, and drought.
