ABSTRACT
Too often soil is regarded as something permanent, to be treated in any manner which will produce crops by the most convenient and economical methods.
This is a dangerous mistake; soil, if not properly cared for and managed, is no more permanent than buildings or machines. Just as they can deteriorate, become worn out and useless, or even removed; so soil can become degraded, worn out, and removed from the farm. The difference being that when machinery becomes worn out or obsolete it can be replaced. Soil cannot normally be replaced.
