ABSTRACT

Goodman and Johanna walked until they didn’t think they had the strength to walk further, but still there was no hint of houses, nor any traffic visible in the dim light. The road was totally deserted. Because of the increas ing force of the wind, the snow had drifted into deep mounds and despite their precautions the snow was seeping into their boots, and their socks and feet were becoming wet and cold. As they continued, heads down against the wind, frost forming on their eyelids, they searched in vain for the telltale light of a safe refbge. But there was nothing. Johanna slipped twice, further adding to her discomfort. Her hands became num b beneath the gloves. Goodman fared litde better.
