ABSTRACT
W ith the onset of the war in Europe in 1939, assertions arose that there was not enough study of applied mathematics at universities in the United States. This was both a general observation and a call to do something better in light of the prospective need for the uses of mathematics in war research. In response to these observations and criticisms, there were efforts to improve, and I will mention a few here.
