ABSTRACT
The difficulties are intrinsic to the position, which involves balancing the budget, encouraging gifts, pleasing the trustees, cajoling the alumni, and keeping both students and faculty in moderate happiness. The president serves many constituencies that, by their nature, are fated to disagree. At Chicago I have seen some presidential failures, and at least one rousing success: Edward Levi handled student unrest at a critical time during the late ’60s.
