ABSTRACT
The purpose of this introductory chapter is to state the cake-cutting problem in some of its various renditions and examine some solutions which have been given. We will avoid unnecessary notation or technical paraphernalia which might detract from what we feel is the simple beauty of the problem. We encourage the reader to envision yourself in a life-or-death struggle with siblings to see that you get a "fair share" of a literal leftover piece of your favorite cake. Don't give up a crumb!
