ABSTRACT

In the third edition of their classic text, Dixon and Massey (1983) in dicate that: “We shall denote the arithmetic mean of the population by the Greek letter μ (mu) and the variance of the population by σ 2 (sigma squared).” Based on this 1983 definition, both mu and sigma squared are curve properties that are also often called the first and second ordinary moment about the mean, respectively.
