My problem, Dear Ann, was that, like many people, I wanted to pursue several incompatible careers simultaneously. I wanted to do research in mathematics and I wanted to write. The National Bureau of Standards was an excellent place for the former. It was not for the latter. No government agency is; if you want to write, that’s your privilege, but not there. You’d best get out.
