ABSTRACT
If Jefferson had been a professional mathematician and not a statesman, a revolutionary, a philosopher of government and a politician, what mathemat ics would have been available to him for study? In very broad strokes I will paint the principal features of the mathematical scene as it was in 1819, the date of Jefferson’s remark about celestial mechanics. Jefferson was then seventy-five years old.
