ABSTRACT
A s my discussions with Bemhelm and as my work on Updating Jefferson pro ceeded, I began to feel tom. I felt pulled in one direction by my love of mathematics and my concern for my profession, and I felt pulled in another direction by the realization that mathematics often promulgated a spirit and a view of the world that I found unacceptable.
