The following year, in the fall of 1986, Meyer was giving a course on wavelets in the United States when he received several telephone calls from a persistent 23-year-old graduate student in computer vision at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. StCphane Mallat is French, and had been a student at the Ecole Polytechnique, one of France's prestigious grandes kcoles, when Meyer taught there, but the two hadn't met.
