ABSTRACT

Zoonoses-infectious diseases that can be transmitted between human and nonhuman vertebrate species (World Health Organization website)—can be viewed as a subset of wildlife conflict, but one that deserves special attention. Zoonotic pathogens are of particular concern, or should be, for those who work in the wildlife management profession because they are more likely to come into close contact with infected animals. Other populations of concern include those whose age or health status may affect their immune system. Initial diagnosis of many zoonotic diseases can be challenging, because they tend to present with vague “flu-like symptoms.” A doctor may not automatically consider zoonoses, so it may be up to the patient to suggest it.
