ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the importance of interactions among different phases in aquatic chemical processes. In a general sense, in addition to water, these phases may be divided between sediments (bulk solids) and suspended colloidal material. The ways in which sediments are formed and the signi cance of sediments as repositories and sources of aquatic solutes are discussed. Mentioned in earlier chapters, solubilities of solids and gases (Henry’s law) are covered here in some detail.
