3.1 Introduction Physical properties of a material describe its behavior under physical stress or treatment, and do not involve the modification or change of its chemical structure. Since physical changes are frequently encountered during manufacture and usage of food packages, a good knowledge on the physical properties of the packaging materials is useful for controlling the package fabrication process and designing suitable food package. Physical behavior of the materials under appropriate conditions also enables one to differentiate apparently similar materials and to identify a certain type of packaging material in question. Hence understanding the physical properties is a fundamental part of packaging materials science.
