The global atmospheric ¥ow presented in Chapter 7 supports a variety of features in spatialandtemporalscalesthatformandevolveasaresultofdisturbancesgeneratedbyhydrodynamicalandvertical(dryormoistconvection)instabilities, andbya varietyofwavesresultingfromdifferentrestoringforcemechanisms.Atmospheric oscillationsandwavesphenomenamanifestinmanydifferentforms, forexample, as deviations relative to the mean spatial values of pressure, geopotential, temperatureorwindspeed, anddirectionorasopacityandopticaldepthvariationsifthey haveassociatedaerosolandcloudformation.Chapters8and9dealwithallthese featuresasobservedinplanetaryatmospheres, separatedintotwoparts:oscillations and waves and then instability phenomena.
