ABSTRACT
Despite what the ancient philosophers thought, music is not purely abstract. It cannot be divorced from the sounds which make it up nor from the instruments which make those sounds. We’ve already seen how the physical properties of some instruments, in particular the human voice, have inuenced the way music has developed. So no scientic study of music can be complete without some understanding of musical instruments.
