ABSTRACT

This group of instruments includes: the recorder, ute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone and bassoon. They are grouped together to distinguish them from those other wind instruments, the ‘brasses’. But the name is misleading. They are not all made of wood-the ute is usually silver, and the saxophone brass. Likewise, as we saw in Interlude 1, it is perfectly possible for a ‘brass’ instrument to be made of wood.
