ABSTRACT
Throughout history, different countries have become leaders in various intellectual elds at different times, and it is always interesting to speculate why. During the years of the late Renaissance, Italy dominated most of the arts and sciences-and presumably this can be correlated with her wealth and political power. But as Italy’s material status declined, the most important science came to be done in England and France, and the center of gravity of the musical world shifted to Germany.
