ABSTRACT

The voice is the oldest of all instruments, but in many ways the slowest to be understood. That the relevant scientic knowledge should have only recently been discovered is not difcult to believe-after all it was only with the invention of electronic equipment that the voice became completely accessible to scientic study. But even knowledge of a musical nature about how the voice was used in earlier times is hard to come by. So let me lay the groundwork for this last interlude with a brief description of what we know about what singing styles were like up till now.
