ABSTRACT

The mechanical properties of materials are very important in determining their applications. For example, one may be interested in choosing a material for loadbearing applications. In that case, a material with high strength is required. Alternately, if one is interested in a material for easy fabrication, then the material should have high ductility. Thus, for different applications, an engineer will have to select a material with an appropriate combination of properties. Even though people talk of materials being strong or weak, a quantitative comparison of the strength properties is essential for an intelligent choice of suitable material.
