ABSTRACT

Cryopreservation of shoot tips can be accomplished by any of the main methods mentioned in Chapter 38. The vitrication-based methods require only tissue culture laboratory facilities and little special equipment, so they are easy to perform in most laboratories. Both techniques involve a direct plunge into liquid nitrogen and a rapid rewarming of the samples. The glass formed by the plunge changes back into the liquid form without the formation of damaging ice crystals.
