ABSTRACT

Recall that a MOS transistor consists of a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) system, two pn junctions, and two metal-semiconductor junctions. To understand the detailed operation of MOS transistors, in this chapter we are first concerned with semiconductor fundamentals, including the intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors coupled with Fermienergy level, work function, and the relationships between impurity concentrations and Fermi-energy levels of both p-type and n-type materials. The carrier transport processes, drift and diffusion processes, are also discussed concisely.
