ABSTRACT

Funds spent on sample analyses by the most sophisticated techniques are wasted on samples collected at inappropriate locations or where an insufficient number of samples are taken to represent the project area. Consequently, the selection of the number and positions of sampling stations needs to be carefully designed. There is no one formula for design of a sediment sampling pattern which would be applicable to all sediment sampling programs. This chapter was prepared to provide a guide to those involved in sediment sampling strategy and preparation of a sediment sampling design, by using examples to illustrate different approaches to the selection of positions and numbers of sediment sampling stations.
