ABSTRACT
There has been substantial interest shown in the use of electron beams intraoperatively for the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas, primarily retroperitoneal sarcomas, at the Mas sachusetts General Hosptial (MGH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Because of the rarity of this tumor, however, experience has been limited. In addition to the interest in the treatment of retroperitoneal sarcomas, there has been some experience from a number of Japanese centers in the treatment of extremity sarcomas where intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) has been used after surgical resection.
