ABSTRACT

The system was developed and tested over an 18-month period of time by the Maxwell House Division of General Foods Corporation and implemented in 1982. The project was initiated by a corporate staff man who specialized in the development of distribution methods. Prior to the coffee powder project, he had achieved success with bulk container shipments of raw materials such as bulk raisins, starch, and bread crumbs. He subsequently made a presentation on the bulk container concept to a group of Maxwell House division managers. A decision was then made to study and evaluate the functional and cost feasibility of adapting the bulk container method to imports of spray-dried coffee powder from Brazil.
