ABSTRACT

3.1 Solvents

In this chapter, we combine two seemingly different topics—solvents and plasticizers. Each plays a different role; solvents reduce viscosity, plasticizers soften and lower the brittle temperature. Yet both are the result of the same phenomenon, increase of the free volume of the polymer. Both are governed by the same laws of solubility. Because a little bit of solvent must go a long way, and because plasticizers are used for many purposes in sealants, understanding the laws which govern their behavior is important for the sealant formulator.
