THE TRACHEO-ESOPHAGEAL SEPTUM Partial cell death and tissue liquifaction normally occurs in this septum during the 4th week, separating the esophagus from the trachea. This allows both structures to grow independently in utero, and to move freely dur­ ing respiration and swallowing postnatally. Abnormal septal inhibition accounts for a variety of defects (Figure 1).
