ABSTRACT

The kidneys, or renal organs, filter the end products of metabolism from the blood and excrete them in soluble form as urine.

CHORDATE KIDNEY The marine sand worm Amphioxus is a present-day member of the phylum Chordata, and is believed to be morphologically similar to the ancestor of the verte brates. The renal apparatus of this living fossil consists of glomeruli, renal tubules, and a primary excretory duct. (A glomerulus is a spherule of tangled capillaries). In Amphioxus, there are two types of glomerulus.
