ABSTRACT

FEATURES OF THE PREMATURE INFANT The premature child differs from one who is born at term, but is “light for dates.” The latter has appropriately developed ear cartilages, breast buds, and external geni talia, and adopts a more flexed posture and has greater muscular tone than a premature infant. The child born at term also exhibits more activity, a stronger cry, and can suck and swallow effectively.
