ABSTRACT

There have been dire warnings that the cultivation of BD-HRC can lead to the evolution of “superweeds” that will inherit the earth.759 So far, there are more cases of introgression of various traits from weeds into crops than vice versa (Table 8.1). Triazine resistance was crossed and backcrossed from weedy Brassica campestris into oilseed rape (B. napus),1343 and from there into many other Brassica species.714 It has also been transferred

from Solarium nigrum to potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) by cybridization; protoplast fusion between the species where the S. nigrum nuclei were inactivated by irradiation.512 ALS resistance has been crossed from Lactuca serriola into domestic lettuce (L. sativa)901 and from wild sunflowers to cultivated sunflowers (both Helianthus annuus) by crop breeders.
