ABSTRACT
Both arthropods and microorganisms have been used to control weeds as biological control agents. Many weeds are not that competitive with the crops or pasture they invade in their centers of origin because they are in a biological balance with various arthropods and microorganisms that thrive on them. They are weedy outside of their centers of origin mainly because they had been imported without these other organisms, and receive the epithet “alien weeds.”
