ABSTRACT

Operations caused by graphite swelling and uranium slug jamming demanded the gaging of graphite cells and even their reaming using specially designed rods and cutters. These operations were conducted in the production reactor by personnel working in shifts and by workers of the Central Laboratory V. I . Klimenkov, A . I . Malov, Y u . K . Shurupov, and others. It was necessary to keep records of operations conducted in each graphite cell. So a system of case histories of graphite cells and fuel channels was introduced. This work was done by a special group keeping records of the reactor operation. Among those who worked in that group over a few years were G.B. Pomerantsev, a future associated member of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan and Yu.I . Korchemkin, a talented physicist-theorist.
