ABSTRACT

A comprehensive report on the research done at Facility No. 5 was presented by Nikitin on July 14, 1948, at the session of the RIAN NTS Council chaired by Khlopin. The NTS appealed to the PGU administration to approve the project of Plant B. By that time most of the engineering staff were adequately trained, and the construction of Plant B and the installation of equipment were close to completion. Among the future managers of the radiochemical plant, who worked at Facility No. 5, were B . V . Gromov, the first chief engineer of the plant, M . V . Gladyshev and A. I . Pasevskiy - Gromov's deputies, N.S. Chugreev, chief of the department of the final extraction of plutonium concentrate by fluoridation, N . G . Chemarin, chief of the technological laboratory, and Ya.P. Dokuchaev, chief of a group for radiometric control of Plant B processes. The operation of Facility No. 5 was supervised by the administration of NII-9 and supported by researchers from Laboratory No. 2 (Pevzner, Kurchatov, and others), who worked in close cooperation with NII-9 and other institutes.
