ABSTRACT

On the proposal of A. I . Alikhanov a Commission on Corrosion of HeavyWater Reactor Equipment was established. Its members were R.S. Ambartsumyan (All-Union Institute of Aircraft Materials), G .V . Akimov and N . D . Tomashev (Institute of Chemical Physics), and B . V . Ershler (Laboratory No. 3). Following recommendations of the Commission, it was decided that the reactor vessel and the pressure chamber should not be anodized. The main materials from which they were manufactured were aluminum alloys. Heat exchangers were also made from an aluminum alloy. In addition to the heavy-water loop, the design included a second loop, filled with ordinary water. The requirements to the tightness of heat exchangers were extremely severe. Reactors on D 2 0 were the first reactors provided with heat exchangers. Their chief designer was B . M . Sholkovich.
