ABSTRACT

It was planned to produce about 200 tons of uranium metal for the F - l experimental reactor and the first production uranium-graphite reactor in 1946-1947. Nearly 150 tons of this uranium were intended for manufacturing cylindrical slugs, 35 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height, tightly encased in aluminum jackets. Plant No. 12 was the first enterprise that mastered an industrial technology for producing uranium metal and manufacturing items of this metal. The plant was a pioneer in the industrial production of uranium slugs, the items that were used from 1945 in nuclear reactors at Chelyabinsk-40 for producing plutonium for nuclear weapons. Without the efforts of Plant No. 12 it would have been impossible to produce on time another nuclear explosive, highly concentrated 2 3 5 U (at Center No. 813, Chelyabinsk-44).
