Ternary Mg Systems with One Rare Earth Metal as a Component

A s far as there are certain similar features in the constitution of the binary phase diagrams

of different rare earth metals with any other metal, it is reasonable to expect also similar

features in the constitution of M g - R E - X phase diagrams, where R E are different rare earth

metals and X is a metal other than a rare earth one. In general, such a conclusion can indeed

be made comparing the ternary phase diagrams of the M g - R E - X type studied, although

certain differences do exist between the phase diagrams M g - R E - X , where X is the same

metal being other than R E . Therefore, it is reasonable to carry out consideration of the

ternary phase diagrams of M g with one rare earth metal as a component in the order of the

opted third components X . Main ly they are Zr, M n , A l , Z n which are widely used in

commercial magnesium alloys as alloying elements. Three other third components chosen

for studies are N i , C d and S i . They are also used for alloying of M g alloys, but much more

seldom.
