ABSTRACT

Notwithstanding the veracity of the old adage that ‘if it can’t be designed on the back of a cigarette packet, it can’t be built’, detailed calculations are essential as justification and evidence of robust engineering in modern design practice. Sadly they are rarely pocket-sized. This chapter provides guidance on detailed design of the sprayed concrete lining only, in a range of ground conditions and special cases. Topics such as face stability or rockbolt design are not covered. More details on tunnel design in general can be found in the following texts: Szechy 1973, Hoek and Brown 1980 and BTS Lining Design Guide 2004.
