ABSTRACT

This chapter presents techniques to assist in the planning of large projects. The techniques considered include the critical path method (CPM) and the Gantt Chart. One of the first modern techniques developed to assist in project planning is the Gantt Chart. In the late 1950s several techniques were developed to assist in the planning of complex projects. Careful planning is required to ensure that a project is completed on time and within budget. Project planning deals with the interrelationships between, and the timing of, the various activities that comprise a project. A number of techniques to assist in scheduling the activities of complex engineering projects. One of the most commonly used techniques today is the CPM. CPM represents all of the activities that make up a project as a network of arrows and nodes.CPM can also be used to identify which are the critical activities.
