ABSTRACT
In Chapter 1we commented on the particle-continuumduality, which characterizes the approach in geotechnical engineering: fundamental aspects of soil behaviour cannot be properly understood without a knowledge of the discrete nature of soils, but mathematical models used in practice to predict the behaviour of geotechnical structures are based on the continuum medium idealization of soils.
