ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the application of wireless sensor networks for monitoring large scale engineering infrastructure such as water supply and sewer systems. The proposed monitoring solutions are based on the results of research carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston (USA) and the Imperial College, London (UK). A trial application of the technology was carried out in the city of Boston over a two-year period (December 2004 – December 2006). While specific aspects are described, the implemented solution is generic and may be readily applied to a wide range of urban water cycle components.
