ABSTRACT
3.1 Introduction
In this chapter, we will discuss the conventional numerical tools used to address coastal engineering problems. The notion of "generations" of modelling to describe the trend of development will be introduced. The feasibility of the incorporation of artificial intelligence techniques into contemporary modelling will be discussed. Several common features for different numerical discretization methods to a simple partial differential equation will be highlighted. Some basic differences between these numerical methods will also be mentioned.
