ABSTRACT
The major objective of this paper is to provide
insight to how innovation is transformed from
knowledge and diffused into the processes of
companies. A framework is designed based on
the innovation value chain (IVC) approach and
components of the innovation process are defined
focussing on the internal and external determi-
nants and outcomes of innovation. In this context,
in collaboration with the Centre for Construction
Innovation (CCI) Northwest, a survey was admin-
istered to the applicants of the 2009 North West
Regional Construction Awards that constituted a
sample size of 47. The awards entrants were chosen
as they all believe that they are at the leading edge
of construction in the region and were willing to
share their innovations, and so the sample should
provide an insight into perceived best practice. A
total of 30 completed questionnaires were returned
resulting in a 64% response rate. Findings of this
survey will be used to guide a research project
conducted by the Salford Centre for Research and
Innovation (SCRI), the aim of which is to inves-
tigate the ways in which innovation occurs in a
project setting and the dynamics between project
and firm level innovation thereby enabling the
analysis of the IVC in terms of the parties involved
in the process.
