ABSTRACT
Research into new optimality crieria methods was motivated by the currently existing discrepancy between analysis capability and optimization capability in structural design, which was pointed out repeatedly by Berke and Knot (e.g. Berke and Khot, 1987). Reasons for this discrepancy can be understood better if we consider the quantities that determine the optimization capability of various methods used in structural design, which are summarized in Table 2.1 in the context of static problems.
