ABSTRACT

In this chapter we describe the application of the existing theory, as well as the application of our theory in the control of deformation of a shear membrane.

6.1.1 Application of the existing theory to study deformation of a shear membrane

Extensive research of the existing structural theory reveals that the horizontal shear membrane, on which lateral forces are simultaneously imposed from two sides, should be exposed to diagonal tension only in two quadrants, while the other two quadrants are exposed to torsion. Because wind or earthquakes can come from any direction, by applying the classical theory, it appears that the horizontal membrane, in order to survive action from any direction, should be guarded against both diagonal failure and torsion. Such facts are illustrated clearly in Figure 6.1 in which it becomes evident that somethingmust bewrongwith the existing structural theory. The nature of deformation of a shear membrane and the stress conditions must be evaluated.
