ABSTRACT

This thesis is about integration. The term integration stems from the Latin word integrare which is etymologically based on in-tangere, a negation of tangere. Therefore, integration has to do with untouchable things and means —according to the definition of the Oxford Dictionary-the bringing together of parts. Actually, there are two meanings which differ slightly: on the one hand, integration means putting together parts of a whole, on the other hand it can mean bringing together independent parts. The main difference lies in the autonomy of the parts, i.e., are the parts intended to be brought together and only meaningful as a whole, or do they have a meaning by themselves?
