Abstract.Wedescriberecentworkonmodellingtheprobe-sampleinteraction inelectrostaticforcemicroscopy(EFM)usingachargedistributionmethod-ofmomentscalculationforaconicalprobethatcanbegeneralisedtoavarietyof probe-specimengeometries.Thisinvolvescalculationoftheforceandforcegradientapproachcurvesenablingcomparisonwithavarietyofexperimental modelsfromsimplemicrodotelectrodestomorecomplexmulti-potential interdigitatedelectrodestructures.Wealsodemonstratetheuseofnon-contact heterodynedetectionmethodsutilisingcantileveramplitudeandphasesignals toquantifyexperimentallytheprobe-specimeninteractionandtoproduce simultaneouslysurfacepotentialandcapacitanceimages.
