AsseparatelyportrayedinFig.3aandFig.3barethepotentialpatternsarisingfroma (+)sheetchargewhichhasonasurfacethepotentialdecreasesfromlefttoright.Two possiblenear-fielddescriptionsmayapply.Thefirstshowsacaseoflocalcharge dominationandhasthenormalfieldcomponentreversinginsignincrossingthesurface.The secondcorrespondstodominationduetoambientfieldandthesaidnormalcomponentdoes notchangesign.
